DUCT SEALANTS EARN GREENGUARD’S HIGHEST STANDARD Rockland, MA (July 25, 2006): GREENGUARD Environmental Institute (GEI) has awarded its Children & Schools Certification to ITW TACC’s water-based duct sealants. Miracle/Kingco brands Ultraseal, M-181 and D-619, and Glenkote duct sealants had already achieved GREENGUARD Indoor Air Quality Certified® status, the only industry sealants to do so. GREENGUARD Children & Schools Certification looks beyond traditional VOCs and verifies low-emissions of phthalates and other hazardous chemicals that can off-gas from some building products and potentially affect the health of building occupants. GEI created Children & Schools Certification to provide designers with building products that account for children’s greater sensitivity. According to GEI, children are more susceptible to environmental toxins than adults. They consume more food, water, and have higher inhalation rates per pound of body weight than adults. “GREENGUARD Children & Schools Certification will give specifiers and installers even greater confidence in Miracle/Kingco duct sealants,” said Product Development Manager William Arscott. “Because more and more, people want to know how a building’s structural materials affect the health of occupants, especially when children are involved.” Adhesives and sealants can contribute significant levels of irritating chemicals into the air, which may lead to serious health effects, especially with rising asthma rates in children, according to GREENGUARD. Prior to GREENGUARD, the standards used to qualify adhesives for indoor use have been based solely on outdoor air criteria with little benefit for indoor environments. The GREENGUARD Certification Program is the first to evaluate adhesives through a comprehensive, indoor air quality-specific approach. About ITW TACC ITW TACC, a division of Illinois Tool Works, develops and manufactures brands of high performance adhesives used in woodworking, building construction, HVAC, roofing, manufactured housing, transportation and marine.
